Need-based aid is financial aid that is awarded based on demonstrated financial need. Aid that may not be need-based includes private scholarships, merit scholarships, and athletic scholarships. Generally, the first step for getting need-based financial aid is filling out the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Also, most states and colleges require the FAFSA to receive state-sponsored and institution-sponsored aid. Additionally, some private scholarships like the Gates Millennium Scholarship require applicants to complete a FAFSA. Check the financial aid requirements for the schools you’re applying to. Some colleges have their own forms or use the CSS/Financial Aid Profile Form for non-federal financial aid. After you fill out the required forms, colleges will determine your eligibility for need-based financial aid. Within 3-5 days of filing your FAFSA (slightly longer if you don’t fill it out online), you’ll be able to access your SAR, or Student Aid Report. Your SAR is a summary of the information you provided on your FAFSA and includes an EFC, or Expected Family Contribution. Your EFC determines your eligibility for financial aid. The colleges you listed on your FAFSA will have access to your SAR and EFC. Colleges base your aid eligibility and offer on your EFC. What Are Some of the Specific Types of Financial Aid You Can Receive? Federal Grants Grants are a preferable type of financial aid for college because they don't needto be paid back. Essentially, grants are free money for college. You must submit a FAFSA and meet federal aid eligibility requirements to be eligible to receive federal grants. Pell Grants The Pell Grant is intended to help low-income students finance their post-secondary education. For the 2015-2016 year, the maximum Pell Grant award is $5,775. The amount of your award is based on your demonstrated financial need, which is determined from the information on your FAFSA. You can estimate the amount of your Pell Grant before you submit your FAFSA by using the Pell Grant calculator. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is a grant for undergraduates with exceptional financial need. Again, need is determined from the information on your FAFSA. Unlike Pell Grants, there is only a limited amount of FSEOG money. Students who receive Pell Grants and have the most need get FSEOGs first. The FSEOG program is administered by the financial aid office at each school. Not every college participates in the program. You can check with a school's financial aid office to find out if it awards the FSEOG. The amount you can receive ranges from between $100 and $4,000 annually. The amount of your grant depends on your financial need, when you apply, the amount of other aid you get, and the availability of funds at your school. Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grants The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is given to students who plan to pursue a career in teaching. As a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve in which you agree to teach in a high-need field at an elementary school, secondary school, or educational service agency that serves students from low-income families.You must do this for at least four academic years within eight years after completing the course of study for which you received the grant. If you do not fulfill the agreement, your grant will be converted into a loan that has to be paid back with interest. The maximum award for grants disbursed between October 1, 2015, and October 1, 2016, is $3,728. If you're interested in the TEACH Grant, you should contact college financial aid offices to find out if theyparticipate in the TEACH Grant Program and to learn about the programs of study at eachschool that are TEACH Grant-eligible. Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant The Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant is for students whose parents were members of the US armed forces and died as a result of military service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after 9/11. Here are the other eligibility requirements for this grant: You're NOT eligible for a Pell Grant on the basis of your Expected Family Contribution. You meet the other Pell Grant eligibility requirements. You were under 24 years old or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of your parent's or guardian's death. The maximum award for Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants disbursed between October 1, 2015, and October 1, 2016, is $5,382.30. Federal Loans Most students can't cover the full cost of attendance with grants and scholarships alone; they have to take out loans to help pay for their college education. Loans have to be paid back with interest. Federal loans are preferable to loans from private lenders because federal loans typically have lower interest rates and cost less to pay back. You must submit a FAFSA to be eligible for most federal loans. Perkins Loan The Perkins Loan is a government-backed, low-interest loan meant for students who demonstrate exceptional financial need. Perkins Loans are unique in that no interest accrues on these loans while you're in school. Also, the grace period for a Perkins Loan is 9 months versus the standard 6 month grace period of most other college loans. The grace period is the period after graduation when you won't be accruing interest on your loan. Direct Stafford Loan A Direct Stafford Loan can be subsidized or unsubsidized. For subsidized loans, the US Department of Education pays the interest on the loan while you're in school, during the 6-month grace period after you graduate, and during a period of deferment. You can only receive a subsidized loan if you demonstrate financial need, but any student whoattends a school that participates in the Direct Loan Program can receive an unsubsidized loan. PLUS Loans PLUS Loans are federal loans that graduate students or professional degree students and parents of dependent undergraduate students can use to help pay education expenses. You must not have an adverse credit history and must attend a school that participates in the Direct PLUS Loan Program to receive a PLUS Loan. The maximum PLUS Loan amount is the cost of attendance minus any other financial assistance received. All PLUS Loans are unsubsidized. You can look up state financial aid programs or contact college financial aid offices to learn more about state-sponsored and college-sponsored financial aid programs. In general, federal Stafford and PLUS loans are preferable to private loans, but private loans are another option if you don't receive enough federal aid. However, federal loans tend to be cheaper and have a fixed interest rate, which means that the rate you’re quoted will not change for the lifetime of the loan. Work-Study The federal work-study programis a need-based program in which the government will subsidize wages for on-campus jobs. Basically, if you're eligible for work-study, you can get an on-campus job to help finance your education. Certain on-campus jobs are only offered to work-study students, and the wages can be relatively generous. Eligibility for work-study is determined through the FAFSA and the other financial aid forms required by your college. Tuition Benefits Some employers offer tuition benefit programs for employees or their dependents. Employers will pay a designated amount of your college tuition through these programs. Check with your employer or your parents' employers to see if they offer any tuition benefit programs. Tax Credits A tax credit will reduce the amount of income tax you or your parents have to pay to help ease the burden of financing your education. The American Opportunity Credit The American Opportunity Tax Credit allows you or your parent to claim up to $2,500 per student per year for the first four years of school as the student works toward a degree or similar credential. California's History of Segregated Education - Essay Example Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) was one of the courts’ rulings, which permitted legal segregation for approximately 60 years. Some people were against, any form of, segregation. For instance, Gonzalo Mendez and other Latino parents filed a case (in 1945) to end segregations, in California’ public schools. The case filed was known as Mendez v. Westminster (1946). They argued that it was wrong to separate students into different schools, simply because they were of different races (Latino or Mexican). The judgement, on this case, was in favour of Mendez: even though the schools’ lawyers argued that the students were segregated because they spoke a foreign language. The court ruled that according to the 14th Amendment, all students had the right to access equal education. Following this ruling, it was unconstitutional to segregate students, on the basis of their national originality. Mendez case, however, was never appealed to the United State Supreme Court. The Brown v. the Education (1954), case also aimed at ending segregations, in California. It ruled that education was to be given to all, on equal terms. The ruling on the Brown case, however, faced some challenges. For instance, the Southern states defied the ruling, while some White Community prevented the NAACP from enrolling Africa-America students, in Central High School (Caplow 305). These three cases were related in that the Mendez case laid the foundation of the Brown case, while the Brown case brought about the reversal of the Plessy (1896) case, in 1954. Both the Mendez and Brown cases also DEJURE segregations of public schools (Ritzer 180). Segregations between the Latino and Mexican America resulted to poor Mexican schools. There were less-experienced teachers, in the Mexican schools than in the Anglo schools. The Mexican students were given less educational materials than the Anglo students (Ritzer 234). In fact, the Mexican students were taught in crowded classrooms, while the Angl o students were taught in spacious classrooms. The segregation was also evident in their curriculum, which was carried out, in the Anglo, and Mexican schools. The Anglo students were taught geometry and biology, while the Mexican students were taught industrial skills and domestic chores (Dundjerski 352). In addition, most of the Anglo teachers discouraged the Mexican students from advancing beyond the eighth grade. Indeed, the Mexican curriculum was of low quality such that the students could not get, any prominent job, after they were through with their classes. The education, which the Mexican got, would only get them cheap jobs in the prospering agriculture communities of California. This segregation, therefore, could not allow the Mexican students to get advanced education; if they got advanced education, then they would not accept farm labor. Segregation between Latino and Mexican America resulted into the discrimination of Mexicans. Mexicans were not allowed in most of the pa rks, dance halls, eateries, hotels, stores, and barbershops. They also had less access to public swimming pool; they were only allowed to swim for one day, weekly (Dundjerski 203). In addition, the swimming pool was cleaned and drained, immediately after the Mexican-America had swum. (Human anatomy, 2010) The Respiratory System The respiratory system, comprised of lungs, passages and muscles which are responsible for exchange of gases within the body and also from outside of the body. Oxygen is breathed into the body and transported to all of the parts and then carbon dioxide is breathed out. (Human Anatomy, 2010) The Nervous system The nervous system is the control centre of the body. It controls and regulates the functions of the body. The system is made of of voluntary and involuntary functions. The nervous system, comprised of the brain, spinal cord, nerves and neurons manages the body systems to work together and also for the organs to work together to create a finely tuned human body. (Human Anatomy, 2010) The Urinary System: The urinary system filters and removes waste from the body and also maintains the right balance of salt and electrolytes in the body. The urinary system is very important in controlling homeostasis in the body. It can control the volume of blood in the body to control blood pressure. ‘The kidneys produce and interact with several hormones that are involved in the control of systems outside of the urinary system’ (Taylor, 2013) Digestive system The digestive system is responsible for the process by which food and drink are broken down into their smallest parts so the body can use them to build and nourish cells and to provide energy. Integumentary System ‘Skin forms the body’s outer covering and forms a barrier to protect the body from chemicals, disease, UV light, and physical damage. Hair and nailsextend from the skin to reinforce the skin and protect it from environmental damage. Theexocrine glands of the integumentary system produce sweat, oil, and wax to cool, protect, and moisturize the skin’s surface’ (Taylor, 2013) Endocrine System The endocrine system is made up of the glands of the body and the hormones produced by these glands. The hormones are used to regulate the body to maintain homeostasis. Lymphatic System the lymphatic system carries interstitial fluid from cells and tissues back to the heart, Elements of the lymphatic system find and get rid of foreign bodies and invaders in the body. Muscular system This is responsible for the movement of and within the body. Comprised of three types of muscle; Visceral muscles – found inside the organs of the body(involuntary); cardiac muscle – found in the heart; skeletal muscle – attached to the skeleton and are the voluntary muscles. Define the signs and symptoms of heart failure and explain why these signs and symptoms occur. Fatigue /Weakness – Often experienced as heaviness of limbs and can be due to poor tissue perfusion of skeletal muscles due to poor cardiac output. (Medscape, 2014) Cardiac fatigue is different from normal fatigue as often progresses through the day and is not present in the morning. Due to reduced cardiac output throught the day and lack of oxygen. Confusion/memory impairment/anxiety/restlessness/insomnia. Due to impaired cardiac output throughout the day the brain may not receive enough oxygen and lead to these symptoms. Nocturia – (early stage heart failure)Caused by increased blood return to the heart when person is lying down which causes increased cardiac output, renal blood flow and glomerular filtration. Oliguria – (Late stage heart failure) – caused by decreased cardiac output and resultant renal failure. Orthopnea – Due to decreased pooling of blood in lower extremeties and also due to ascites, too much blood rushes back to the heart and it cannot cope with it through several processes the result is increased airway resistance leading to dyspnoea. (Medscape, 2014) Paroxysmal Nocturnal dyspnoea – This is a sensation of shortness of breath that awakens the patient, possibly due to increased airway resistance (See Orthopnea) (Mukerji., 1990) Abdominal Distention – Due to Ascites Abnormal Heart beat Atrial and Ventricular arrhythmias – Irregular pulse Due to disturbance in contractions of the heart Nausea Due to gastrointestinal problems with the digestive system not receiving enough blood and with the digestive system and liver becoming congested. Increase in blood pressure – Because the heart is not able to pump the blood around the body as effectively and an increase in fluid build up in the body the blood pressure increases. Shortness of breath/gasping for air –Due to acute pulmonary oedema where capillary fluid has moved into the alveoli. Chest Pain/Pressure – Can be due to either primary or secondary myocardial ischemia Cyanosis – due to acute pulmonary oedmea lack of oxygen throughout the body due to poor gas exchange. Palpitations – ‘It can be secondary to sinus tachycardia due to decompensated heart failure, or more commonly, it is due to atrial or ventricular tachyarrhythmias.’ (Medscape, 2014) Weight gain – rapid weight gain is often observed in patients with heart failure due to fluid retention. Crackles in lungs – Can be Due to acute pulmonary oedema where capillary fluid has moved into the alveoli. Chronic Dry, non productive cough which becomes worse when patient is lying down – Congestion of the bronchial mucosa may causes bronchospasm which may cause wheezing and difficulty in breathing. Diabetes is key risk factor of CCF and loss of appetite is indicative of GI problems associated with heart failure Elimination : Constipated : This could be a sign of the digestive system not working properly due to lack of blood supply Mental State : Confusion could be a sign of lack of oxygen reaching the brain. Emotional Status : Anxiety of his condition could exascerbate his other feelings of anxiety Do you think the diabetes is related to the leg ulcer and amputated left toe? explain. Yes. The most common cause of chronic leg ulcers is poor circulation. Diabetics may have poor circulation due to the increased glucose in the blood and hardening of the blood vessels. This poor blood supply may lead to neuropathy and the nerve damage affects the condition of the skin. A non healing ulcer that causes severe damage to tissue and bone may need amputation. Troy, Truth in the Myth? Essay -- Ancient History

The ancient city of Troy, a legendary city in classical literature and Hollywood films alike, has been an attraction to visit for at least twenty-five centuries. Visitors such as Alexander the Great, who stopped at Troy in 334 BC while on route east to conquer Asia, came to Troy looking for the city immortalized in Homer's Iliad. Presently, archaeologists visit Hisarlik, a site in northwest Turkey, as it is believed to be the location of the ancient city. Alexander must have been puzzled when he had arrived in Ilion, the name of the city at the time of his visit. Ilion was a small colony founded centuries after the Trojan War supposedly took place; Alexander and his men must have had a similar reaction to what they saw as many a tourist does today. Visiting the site today, you will find no grand buildings, just broken marble blocks everywhere, and stubs of stone protruding from the ground at every possible angle. To the ancient Greeks, the Iliad was the fountain of Western civi lization. Troy, to the Romans, was the birthplace of Aeneas, who escaped the burning city to found Rome. So what is the real story of this city? Is the Iliad a true account of history, or just a tale that has been passed down through the generations, for the sole entertainment of its audiences? These are questions that classics experts, archaeologists, and even palaeontologists have studied for many years. The Iliad can never be seen as pure history as the work predates, by three centuries, the concept of history as a sourced analysis of past events. But by studying the stories, as well as the physical evidence left behind today, we can find clues to the reality in this myth. Atticus Finch Characterisation

Sebastian Huitron English Honours 11B Miss Rachel MacNally 10/04/2013 Character Analysis: Atticus To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee in 1960. It was a time in which African Americans lacked the same rights as white people. The novel is a social critique set somewhere in the 1930s. Atticus Finch is one of the major characters in the novel. He is the father of Jeremy â€Å"Jem† and Jean Louise â€Å"Scout†, he is also a lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama. In a city reigned by social inequality and intolerance, Atticus represents justice and morality.Racism is one of the major themes in the book, since the story takes place in the 1930s. It is clear in the novel that African Americans lack the same opportunities and rights, and most of the white people treat them different, except for Atticus. Atticus tries to see things from others’ perspectives and treats everyone in the same way. Atticus is a man of principles and is constantly judged by other people for his tolerance towards African Americans calling him a â€Å"nigger-lover†. The fact is that Atticus is colorblind, so to speak.He does not care if they are white, black, red, yellow, purple, or blue, for him everyone is a human who has the same rights as everyone else. Social status is not something Atticus Finch worries about, he gives all the citizens in Maycomb the same treatment, hence earning the respect and mocks of the people living there. In chapter eleven, Atticus says â€Å"I do my best to love everybody. † (Lee 108) It is this sense of colorblindness that makes Judge Taylor appointed Tom Robinson’s rape case specifically to Atticus. Tom Robinson was an African American who was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a seventeen-year old white girl.Perhaps even Judge Taylor knew that Tom Robinson was innocent, but it is important to recall that African Americans were always found guilty, even if the evidence pointed in a different way. Atticus believes in justice and the justice system, though he does not like criminal law. Atticus explains to Jean Louise the reason why he is willing to defend Tom Robinson. He is defending Tom Robinson not because he is an African American, but because he is innocent. According to stereotypes, lawyers are only interested in being paid; they do not really care about the case and their client. Atticus akes us have a different perspective on lawyers. He can be called as an â€Å"ideal lawyer†, he represents everything a man working in the justice system should do. He is fair, listens to both sides of the court, thus having different perspectives of the events, as well as seeing everything from different angles. Atticus applies these same principles in his house; Jean Louise says that whenever Jem and she fight, Atticus listens to both sides of the stories before reaching a solution. Atticus is an outstanding parent. He treats his children as adults but he knows that they are still kids and that they may do childish mistakes.Atticus is sincere with his children and answers all their questions, for example, he explained what â€Å"rape† was to Jean Louise. He constantly asks the question â€Å"Do you really think so? † when he wants their children to reconsider what they have stated or asked. It is an important factor that he does not adjust his speaking tone to what other people would consider is the right tone when talking to children; he talks to them as if they were mature adults. â€Å"’I’m afraid our activities would be received with considerable disapprobation by the more learned authorities. Jem and I were accustomed to our father’s last-will-and-testament diction, and we were at all times free to interrupt Atticus for a translation when it was beyond our understanding. ‘Huh, sir? ’ ‘I never went to school,’ he said, ‘but I have a feeling that if you tell Miss Caroline we read every night she’ ll get after me, and I wouldn’t want her after me. ’† (Lee 32). This quote is a proof of the previous statement and also shows that Atticus is devoted to his children and takes into consideration what they want. Jean Louise explained Atticus that if going to school meant that they couldn’t read at night, then she didn’t want to go.Atticus replies by explaining why it is important to go to school. In the end they make an agreement in which Jean Louise will go to school and they will continue reading at night as long as she does not tell Miss Caroline about it. Almost at the end of the book, Atticus gives his reasons to Mr. Tate on why Jem should be tried just as anyone else. â€Å"If this thing’s hushed up it’ll be a simple denial to Jem of the way I’ve tried to raise him. Sometimes I think I’m a total failure as a parent, but I’m all they’ve got. † (Lee 273). This is Atticus maximum expression of love , respect and devotion to his son.Atticus has a very strict code of honor and tries to pass on his own values to his children. The reason why he puts much effort into the Tom Robinson’s case is not because Tom Robinson is actually an African American, but because he is innocent. As stated before, he is â€Å"colorblind†. Atticus recognizes that Calpurnia takes a very important role in the house since it is her who is practically raising the kids. In chapter three, Atticus makes Jean Louise realize how important Calpurnia is for them, â€Å"I’ve no intention of getting rid of her, now or ever. We couldn’t operate a single day without Cal, have you ever thought of that?You think about how much Cal does for you, and you mind her, you hear? † (Lee 25). Miss Maudie once told Jean Louise that â€Å"Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is in the public street. † (Lee 46). A clear example is when he personally goes to Tom Robinson’s w ife to inform her about the news of his now late husband. He does not behave like the other White people in Maycomb, perhaps anybody else would have just sent a messenger to deliver this terrible news. If there is anything that Atticus truly detests are people taking advantage over others.The only time that he seriously lectures his children is on the evils of taking advantage of those that are not so fortunate or who do not have the same level of education. â€Å"As you grow older you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, of how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash. † (Lee 200). Even if Atticus is often mocked or threatened for one reason or another, he still sees only the good in people and tries to excuse their bad actions.Miss Dubose, for example, is always insulting Atticus in fro nt of his kids. Even though Jean Louise tells Atticus about what Miss Dubose says, he excuses it by saying that she is a very old, lonely woman. After Miss Dubose’s death, he explains Jem why Miss Dubose was a lady after all and that Jem could actually learn something from her. â€Å"I wanted you to see something about her—I wanted you to see what real courage is [†¦]. It’s when you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see through it through no matter what. She was the bravest person I ever knew. † (Lee 112).In conclusion, Atticus finch is a very righteous person with a â€Å"colorblind† code of honor. He is often mocked but is still respected by everyone and he is the man everyone goes to in times of need. As a parent, Atticus tries to teach his kids the same values he has and although he treats them as adults, he still knows they are children. In one word, Atticus is a gentleman. His sense of justice is explained th rough this last quote, â€Å"You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women— black or white.This is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men. † (Lee 204). In handwriting, the equivalent of italics is underlining. As shown below, italics are most commonly used for the titles of works that stand by themselves, such as the names of books, films, and video games.  Another customary use of  italics is  to give emphasis to key words and phrases in a sentence. Euthanasia7 essays The term Euthanasia has become well known throughout the country. The word is derived from ancient Greek eu thantos, meaning easy death. Today, euthanasia is referred to as mercy killing. There is much controversy over whether or not the practice is just. Euthanasia raises many religious, medical, and ethical issues. Euthanasia can either be active or passive. Active euthanasia occurs when a physician or other medical personnel induces death. An overdose is administered to the patients in the form of insulin, barbiturates, or morphine, and then followed by an injection of curare. Passive euthanasia, on the other hand, is allowing the patient to die due to lack of treatment. This includes taking the patient off their support system, or respirator. Passive euthanasia also includes stopping the food supply intravenously to comatose patients (Comptons, 1). Debate has flourished against those who accept passive euthanasia, but reject active. Questions are asked why one form is accepted and not the other. The distinction that is made between the two of them is that active is murder, while passive is merciful.
